Throughout the course of its history the Montessori Movement has worked to champion the cause of children and has co-operated with other organisations to further the development of education, human rights and peace.

In particular, the Association Montessori Intrenationale (AMI) has as one of its objectives:

Functioning as a social movement that will strive to obtain recognition for the rights of the child throughout the world, irrespective of race, religion, political and social beliefs; co-operating with other bodies and organisations which further the development of education, human rights and peace.

AMI is an Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) represented at the United Nations (since 1985) and an NGO in operational relations with UNESCO (since 1962).

Montessori Schools and children also particiapte in programmes that support human rights and peace, in particular SCREAM and the UNESCO Associated Schools Project.
